Effective Interviewing Skills

Apr 24, 2025 | Interviewing

Successful interviews don’t just happen, they’re strategically crafted. Whether you’re stepping into the room or logging into Zoom, your prep work determines your performance.

Here’s your quick game-plan to ensure your next interview isn’t just good, but exceptional:

Think about your non-verbal cues

There are three components of communication: body language (including facial expressions, eye contact, posture, and hand gestures), tone of voice (referring to the intonation or rise and fall of your voice), and the words you use (verbal communication). We often focus on our words rather than on how we say them. Research shows that body language and tone of voice can significantly influence how someone interprets what you say, often even more than the words themselves.

So, what does this mean when you are interviewing?

Non-verbal communication provides insights into your confidence, enthusiasm, and engagement. A firm handshake, a relaxed yet upright posture, and consistent eye contact demonstrate professionalism and self-assurance. Conversely, slouching or avoiding eye contact can undermine even the most articulate responses.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

A high EQ allows you to read social cues, adapt to the interviewer’s communication style, and gracefully manage stress. Your thoughtful responses foster a more balanced and enjoyable interaction.

Careful and active listening is crucial for reading social cues. Ensure you listen to hear and understand what the interviewer is saying rather than listening with the intent to respond. Trust me, that deeper listening level will benefit you in an interview. Be sure to ask follow-up questions to demonstrate your engagement and pose thoughtful follow-up inquiries.

Preparation

Research the company’s culture, values, and recent achievements, and then tailor your responses to reflect these insights. While preparing, consider past experiences and share engaging stories that emphasize your problem-solving skills, leadership qualities, and adaptability.

Rehearse. I cannot emphasize this enough. Practice what you plan to say until it becomes second nature and flows effortlessly in conversation.

By concentrating on these elements, you can cultivate stronger connections and distinguish yourself in a competitive job market.
