You can’t connect with people you don’t understand. And you can’t pivot in real time if you’re not reading what’s actually happening in front of you.
Here’s a 60-second scan that changes everything:
0–10 seconds: Energy check
Feel the room. Is it buzzing or quiet? Are people leaning in or pulling back?
:11–:20: Notice patterns
Where are the eyes? On you, each other, or devices? Spot the influencers and the quiet decision- makers.
:21–:30: Emotional temperature
Read the faces. Open or guarded? Is laughter natural or forced?
:31–:40: Readiness
Are they locked in or multitasking? Pens ready or laptops open?
:41–:50: Identify roles
Who carries weight? Where people sit and who they align with tells you more than titles.
:51–:60: Pivot
Now adjust.
If energy is low, slow down and open with a story or a bold question. If skepticism is high, lead with proof and show your thinking.
If urgency is high, go straight to the headline and the ask.
If curiosity is high, invite them in. “Here’s the frame… what are we missing?”
