Are you an unaware communicator?

Jul 15, 2026 | Communication

Most communication breakdowns have very little to do with intent.

They have everything to do with impact.

You think you’re being direct. Others experience you as vague. You think you’re being thorough. They feel overwhelmed. You think you’re being calm and measured. They read you as stressed, frustrated, or disengaged.

Tone. Timing. Pace. Facial expressions. Word choice. Every one of them sends a message, whether you intend it to or not.

The challenge is that most people never stop to consider how they’re actually landing with others.

If you want to become a more effective communicator, start paying attention to the patterns around you. Who stops contributing after you speak? Who never disagrees with you? Who feels the need to over-explain themselves in your presence?

Those signals are worth noticing.

The most powerful communicators I know are also the most self-aware. They pay attention to verbal and nonverbal feedback. They adjust in real time. Most importantly, they stay curious about their impact long after the conversation ends.

Awareness isn’t a trait. It’s a practice. One of the most valuable questions you can ask is: “When I said that, what did you hear?”

Asked consistently, that question will teach you more about your communication than almost any book, course, or training program.

Stop asking, “Did I say it right?”

Start asking, “Did it land the way I intended?”

That shift has a way of exposing blind spots and helping you become the communicator others need you to be.
