Some of the most expensive communication breakdowns happen in conversations that seem to go perfectly fine. Everyone talks. Everyone nods. No one pushes back. Then, days later, the outcome looks nothing like what you expected.
Being heard is not the same as being understood.
You can deliver the message clearly and still have people interpret it differently. They filter what you say through their assumptions, experiences, priorities, and even what they expected to hear.
That’s why understanding requires confirmation.
Don’t just ask, “Any questions?” That question usually gets you silence. Instead, ask, “What did you hear me say?” or “How are you going to communicate this to your team?” Clarify the decision. Confirm the deadline. Make sure everyone leaves knowing what happens next.
Confusion caught early is inexpensive. Confusion discovered later becomes missed expectations, frustration, rework, and resentment.
And understanding isn’t only about the words. Sometimes you need to acknowledge what’s underneath them: “I can understand why that’s frustrating.” Or “Tell me what concerns you most about this.”
Great communication isn’t measured by what you say. It’s measured by what the other person understood and what happens next.
Don’t just deliver the message. Close the loop.
