Contrary to what most people think, you don’t always burn out because you’re working too hard. It also happens when you’re working hard on the wrong things.
Misalignment sneaks in quietly when your calendar no longer matches your values. Your strengths aren’t used, and the outcomes you’re measured on don’t reflect the impact you care about. Suddenly, the work that used to light you up now just drains you. You’re efficient, but empty; productive, but resentful.
If you’re feeling the beginning of burnout, check your alignment across five lanes. First, look at your values. Does your week reflect what matters to you?
Next, think about your strengths. Are you using the skills that make time fly?
Third, look at your impact. Are you measured on outputs that feel meaningful?
And of course, consider the people around you. Does your manager and team amplify or mute your best work?
Now, adjust. Do a two-week energy audit to list all your tasks. Circle what fuels you and box what drains you. With that information, look ahead and trade tasks or redraw your role where you can.
Burnout can be a strategy problem more than a stamina problem. Fix the fit, and your energy often returns faster than you think.
