Communicate Clearly and Respectfully
Assertive communication is usually very clear but may not always feel respectful regardless of the leader’s intent. As you clearly express your thoughts, expectations, and feedback, watch your tone and words so that you do not come off as dismissive of others’ viewpoints. Use “I” statements to own your feelings and opinions, such as, “I believe we should prioritize this project because…” to reduce the chances of others feeling attacked and help maintain mutual respect.
Listen Attentively
Assertive leaders tend to be quick to speak and may not come across as always listening to another person. Ensure you listen to your team members to truly hear what they are saying so they feel heard and respected. In turn, they will trust you as you create an open forum for communication.
Show Empathy and Compassion
One can be assertive and empathetic. Taking the time to understand and acknowledge your team’s feelings and challenges builds a stronger connection. Show compassion when addressing issues and be supportive, which will foster a positive and trusting relationship.
Seek Feedback To Improve
Solicit feedback from your team regularly about your leadership style and approach. Being open to input from others exemplifies your humility and commitment to growth, which are both respected and highly valued traits.
