Combating Stress and Burnout So You Can Perform At Your Best

Jul 9, 2024 | Personal Growth

High levels of prolonged stress can lead to burnout – emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. To maintain peak performance both personally and professionally, it’s crucial to be able to manage your stress.

Understand the Signs of Stress and Burnout

Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of satisfaction from achievements can all signal that it’s time to take action. Listen to your body and mind; the earlier you identify these signs, the easier it will be to take corrective measures.

Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care is an essential tool for managing stress. This means taking care of your body by getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and nurturing your mental health through non-work activities, hobbies, or simply taking breaks throughout the day to breathe and reset. Every New Year, we promise ourselves we’ll do this, but it often gets forgotten.

Set Boundaries

In today’s culture of constant connectivity, setting boundaries between work and personal life is critical. Be clear about your work hours and stick to them.

Disconnect from work emails and communications after hours to give yourself time to recharge. Communicate your boundaries to colleagues and superiors to ensure they’re understood and respected.

Take Breaks and Vacations

Give yourself permission to step away when needed. Short, frequent breaks during the workday can help clear your mind and reduce stress.

Additionally, make use of your vacation days — they’re there for a reason. Vacations or “staycations” offer extended periods to unwind and enjoy activities unrelated to work, helping you to return refreshed and productive.

Learn to Say “No”

Overcommitting is a direct path to stress and burnout. Learn to assess your workload and say no (with finesse) to additional tasks when you’re already stretched thin. It’s better to excel at a few projects than to perform poorly on many.

Seek Support

Don’t be apprehensive to ask for help. If stress significantly impacts your life, talk to a supervisor, discuss strategies with peers, or seek professional help managing time and workload. This is now widely accepted and expected in today’s workplace.

By understanding the warning signs of stress and burnout and implementing strategies to prioritize well-being, you can ensure you’re healthy and performing at your best to thrive, not survive.
