Connecting Like A PRO for Effective Communication

Feb 10, 2025 | Communication

Are there people in your life you naturally connect with? The ones who just get you and vice versa—where conversations flow effortlessly, and collaboration, especially professionally, feels like second nature?

On the flip side, there are likely others who feel like the opposite—your kryptonite. These individuals might clash with your style, create friction, or even slow down or stall workflows entirely.

The difference between these dynamics boils down to one thing: connection. It’s a concept I’ve been observing, studying, and developing for years to help leaders and high-performing professionals foster better relationships and stronger teams through my keynote talks and workshops.

Here’s what I’ve discovered and built impactful programs around:

Each of us has internal drivers, or what I call underlying needs—our superpowers. When these needs are recognized and met, individuals are inspired, motivated, and operating at their peak. But when those needs are unmet—or worse, triggered in the wrong way—they can become kryptonite, causing disengagement, conflict, or a total shutdown.

At the heart of it all is communication. Leaders who understand how to tap into these underlying needs can unlock motivation and performance. Conversely, without awareness, they risk unintentionally demotivating their teams by working against these needs. Connection isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s the secret weapon to unleashing potential and achieving extraordinary results.

I have identified four core drivers present in all of us, but one will always rise to the surface and be dominant. This is not about personality tests or professional assessments. It is way more accessible, tangible, and applicable.

Underlying needs are shortcuts I have identified to help you understand those key motivators and drivers within someone else (professionally or personally). Knowing someone else’s allows you to communicate in ways that forge and foster productive and positive relationships.

Effective leaders must understand the individuals on their teams, what motivates each person, and how to tailor actions and communication styles accordingly. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. To keep people engaged and productive, leaders need to identify the human side of what drives someone. By “getting” their employees, leaders can create a sense of belonging and empowerment.
