I’m a big believer in boundaries. But not everything that gets labeled a boundary is a boundary. Sometimes it’s resignation in disguise.
It starts subtly. You do only what’s required. You stop speaking up in meetings. You avoid difficult conversations. You tell yourself, “It’s not my job,” and move on. Some people call that self-care. Often, it’s something else.
Healthy boundaries are intentional. They’re communicated. They sound like, “I’m not available after 6:00 p.m.” or “I need to step back because my workload isn’t sustainable.” Boundaries create clarity. They help people stay engaged without burning out.
Checking out looks different. You stop sharing ideas because it doesn’t feel worth it. You stop caring because caring has become exhausting. Eventually, work becomes something you endure rather than something you contribute to.
I’ve seen this happen to talented people at every level. The issue isn’t weakness. More often, it’s a sign that someone is overloaded, under-supported, or no longer feels heard.
If that sounds familiar, pay attention. The answer isn’t to build higher walls. It’s to have the conversation, realign priorities, seek support, or change the environment.
Boundaries should protect your energy. They shouldn’t disconnect you from your purpose.
