EQ Isn’t Enough Anymore. Leaders Need CQ.

Jul 16, 2026 | Leadership

For years, emotional intelligence (EQ) has been one of the most important leadership skills. It helps leaders understand themselves, read others, and navigate relationships more effectively.

Today, that’s no longer enough.

The leaders I work with are managing global teams, multiple generations, different communication styles, and people shaped by very different professional and cultural experiences. In that environment, context matters just as much as intent.

That’s where cultural intelligence (CQ) comes in.

CQ is the ability to adapt your communication and leadership approach without losing your authenticity. It’s understanding that directness may be appreciated in one culture and viewed as abrasive in another. It’s recognizing that silence can signal disagreement, respect, reflection, or uncertainty depending on the person and the environment.

Without CQ, leaders often misinterpret what they’re seeing.

  • “They’re not proactive.”
  • “They lack confidence.”
  • “They aren’t collaborative.”

Sometimes those aren’t performance issues at all. They’re interpretation issues. The strongest leaders don’t assume. They get curious.

They ask questions like: What does great communication look like here? How are decisions typically made on your most successful teams? What does respectful disagreement sound like in this environment?

CQ is not about changing who you are. It’s about expanding your range so more people can connect with what you bring.

EQ helps you connect with people. CQ helps you lead across differences.

And in today’s workplace, that’s becoming one of the most valuable leadership skills of all.
