How To Build Trust With Someone You Just Met

May 8, 2026 | Personal Growth

Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship, personal or professional. And here’s what most people miss…it doesn’t take months. It starts in the first few minutes.

Be fully present. Put the phone away. Don’t look rushed. Presence is the first signal of respect. Lead with honesty and openness. Set the tone early. “I’ve got 25 minutes and want to make this valuable for you. What would make this a win?” That lowers defenses and creates immediate alignment.

Get curious. Ask short, relevant questions and let silence work. People trust those who make space for their story. Reflect what you hear to confirm understanding. Watch how quickly that builds connection. Make a small, specific commitment and follow through. Even the smallest kept promise builds credibility fast. And don’t be afraid to be human. Saying, “I’ve been there before,” creates relatability and trust.

Trust grows where people feel seen and safe. Be the person who shows up, pays attention, and does what they say they’ll do.
