Great sales conversations do not start with a pitch. They start with presence. Your first objective is to create an environment that feels comfortable, open, and productive so real dialogue can take place.
Once that tone is established, your next move is clarity. You must quickly understand what is driving the person across from you. What are they trying to achieve? What pressure are they under? What outcome matters most? When you identify their motivating factors early, you can guide the conversation with purpose instead of guessing your way through it.
What changed that made this a priority now? Or why is this a priority now? If this went better than planned, what would be true in three months? What worries you most about moving forward, and what would make that feel safer? How are you measuring success, and how could we help you win on that score? Who else will feel this change, and how can we make it a win for them too?
Use one question at a time. Ask, then pause. Allow them to think and leave space for them to speak. Don’t rush to your deck, because their answers are your map.
Listen with empathy. Restate what you heard in simple words, then check if you understood correctly. Fill in the gaps with a small next step that fits their situation. Your goal is to provide a test or pilot that demonstrates a quick win.
These sentences work across roles and levels. Their power is twofold: they not only encourage honesty and reduce pressure but also provide insights you can act on immediately.
Try one on your next call. You’ll notice how the tone shifts and how trust grows.
