Most people were taught the Golden Rule: treat others how you want to be treated. It sounds right, but it misses the mark. The best leaders follow the Platinum Rule: treat people how they want to be treated. That’s where real motivation begins.
Not everyone is driven by the same things. You might be fueled by autonomy and big goals, while someone else needs stability, recognition, or a sense of belonging. Motivate everyone the same way, and you’ll get inconsistent effort and disengagement.
The move is simple. Learn what drives each person. Some need purpose. Others need control over how they work. Some want to build mastery. Others want wins. Common drivers include achievement, security, recognition, and growth.
So ask: where do they do their best work? What energizes them? What drains them? Then watch. Who thrives in ambiguity? Who prefers structure? Who wants feedback versus visibility?
Once you know, adjust. Connect purpose-driven people to the “why.” Give autonomy to those who need control. Create clear scoreboards for achievement-driven performers. And be thoughtful with recognition. What motivates one person can turn another off.
Motivation isn’t one-size-fits-all. The best leaders tailor their approach and give people what they need to perform at their best.
