Leadership doesn’t begin with a promotion. It begins long before you ever get the title. It starts with how you show up when no one is watching. Sit with that for a moment.
Leadership isn’t defined by the big moments. Those will come. It’s defined by who you are every single day. The habits you build. The standards you hold. The way you treat people when there is nothing to gain.
As you think about the kind of leader you want to become, here are a few areas to focus on and d evelop:
What are your values in life? What drives and motivates you? How do those inform how you will le ad?
Self-awareness is a key indicator of strong, effective leadership. It involves the ability to clearly understand your own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, and motivations, and to recognize how these influence yourself and others. Developing this skill now and adopting practices to boost your self-awareness can be a game-changer.
Part of self-awareness is knowing your triggers. What makes you defensive? How do you act when you are mad or frustrated? Knowing these things helps you respond not impulsively but with calm and intent.
Build trust in small moments. Be on time and do what you said you would do. Integrity becomes character.
Ask for feedback. Great leaders know who they are and where they stand with their teams. Be open and receptive, and be willing to adapt and evolve as a leader.
There are many conscious decisions that help you to grow into the leader you want to be. I highly recommend finding a mentor and a peer group to share wins and misses with.
While some may be natural leaders, most must become the leaders they want to be… who will you be as a leader?
