Being able to present effectively is essential for many roles. Whether you’re presenting to your manager/supervisor or leader, team, company, customer, or the board, if you want to be successful in your career, how you present matters. And, while many don’t love presenting and say they aren’t good at it, I can tell you that taking your presentation game from a “meh” to a home run is not as hard as you might think it is.
Here are some quick tips to elevate your next presentation:
1. Ignite interest
The best way to ignite interest is to make your presentation interactive. By involving the audience and having them be a part of the story you’re telling, you have a greater chance of them being engaged and remembering what you said later as they’re now invested in the information. Even if your presentation is to inform or update on something, find ways to bring your audience into the conversation throughout your time in front of them.
2. Be relevant
The most important thing about any presentation is that it needs to be applicable to your audience. How you present the year-end sales report to your team is very different from how you would present it to the board. The information presented to a new client will be different from an existing client. Who needs detail and who needs top level information? What information is important for each audience?
3. Preparation makes perfect
Practice, practice, practice. Make sure you know your slides inside and out, so you’re not looking at them all the time or worse, reading from them. If this is a big presentation with a lot on the line, rehearse it in front of a skilled, trusted advisor who can provide you with valuable and critical feedback on a few levels including content and the way you look and sound delivering it.
Take your time as presentations are important and are a lot more fun and way more impactful when you are well prepared.
