Real-World Ready? Let’s Talk.

Jun 9, 2025 | Soft Skills

Graduation season is here, and for every cap tossed, a question echoes: “Now what?”

Stepping into the professional world for the first time isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s disorienting. And it’s not just about job offers or lack thereof. It’s about the jarring reality that the rules of the “real world” are wildly different from those in school.

Confidence doesn’t come from a GPA. Success isn’t graded on a curve. And navigating it all requires a new kind of playbook.

The real world requires different skills

In school, expectations were clearly outlined. Studying hard enables people to ace tests. Careful preparation and following the rules resulted in good grades on projects.

But success in the real world requires self-awareness, social skills, and emotional intelligence — qualities that academic environments don’t usually teach. According to a recent survey, 84% of respondents recognize that these so-called “soft skills” are vital for the workplace. Another survey found that 89% said that people who turned out to be “bad hires” lacked these same skills.

Members of the Executive leadership team look for team members who display emotional intelligence, strong interpersonal skills, presence, and self-management. Cultivating these qualities can carry people further in the real world than their hard skills, knowledge, or even their degrees.

Time to grow

While the time after graduation can be unsettling and uncertain, it also provides an exciting training ground. For those who haven’t prioritized interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, now is the time to grow in these areas.

While no one is expected to be perfect on their first day, those who understand that they have areas for improvement have an advantage over the rest.
