The Summer Slump is a Myth

Aug 3, 2026 | Personal Growth

You hear it every year: “It’s summer; everyone’s checked out.” Teams use that sentence like a permission slip.

The fact is that people aren’t checked out. They’re just checking out of work that feels like it can wait. Summer doesn’t kill momentum, but unclear priorities do. When goals get slack, accountability gets casual. When leadership communication drops, energy follows it. And when “we’ll circle back after Labor Day” becomes the strategy, everyone stops taking urgency seriously.

I know this is true because I’ve also seen the opposite. Some teams light up in summer because they finally have space to focus. Fewer meetings. Faster cycles. Clearer thinking. Summer can be your competitive advantage if you treat it like one.

Don’t blame the calendar. Name what’s missing. What decision are you avoiding? What’s not being led? What would happen if you made one thing non-negotiable for the next four weeks?
