Tips to Elevate Your Presentation Skills to Foster Connection with Your Audience from Day One

Breaking into the workforce? You bring more than a GPA… here are some things to think about as you prepare.

Practice a clear story about your path. Share one moment that shows effort and one that shows growth. Use simple language to show what you learned and how you helped a person or a team.

Research the company to know what they do and who they serve. Learn one recent win and one challenge they face, then tie your stories to their world by saying how your skills will move a metric or ease a challenge.

A proven way to structure your practice is the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Describe the situation, give an overview of the task you needed to accomplish, highlight the action you took, then explain your result and wrap it up with a brief reflection to examine what you would do next time.

Keep your answers short. Stop when you land the point. Let silence work for you. Don’t be afraid to ask bold questions. What does success look like in 90 days? What does the best person in this role do differently? What can I learn now to start strong? Curiosity shows drive.

Bring energy and presence. Sit tall, keep steady eye contact, and smile assertively. Confidence grows when you prepare.

Close with care. Repeat back what you heard about their needs and how you can help. Ask about next steps. When you send a short thank you later that day or night, name one thing you enjoyed in the talk.

Remember, you’re not selling yourself. You’re offering value. Own that.
