To Truly Motivate Your Team, You Must Understand Them First

Apr 7, 2026 | Sales

Motivating your team isn’t about hype, it’s about unlocking how they perform at their best. And that only happens when you understand them, individually and as a unit, so you can move them forward with intention.

Start with questions. Real ones. What’s toughest right now? What’s the one thing making your job harder than it should be?

Then do what most leaders skip, reflect it back. Let people hear themselves in your words. You might say, “What I’m hearing is the handoff isn’t clear and it’s creating rework. Did I get that right?”

Don’t stop at empathy. You show true understanding and compassion by removing friction. For example, fix the broken process before you ask for bigger numbers.

Another way to show understanding is to make goals personal. Remember to share the why and the why-now so people have context, not just commands.

It’s important to remember that people rarely disengage out of apathy. But they disengage all the time to protect themselves from ‌environments that don’t get them. Be the leader who listens. Advocate for simplifying the work and clearing the path. When people feel understood, they’ll walk through walls.
