What 25 Years on Stage Has Taught Me About Leadership

After 25 years on stages around the world, I’ve had a front-row seat to humanity at its best and sometimes at its most guarded. I’ve worked with leaders at every level imaginable across healthcare, technology, construction, manufacturing, financial services, professional services, and high-growth sales organizations. CEOs. Senior executives. Frontline managers. Entrepreneurs. Young professionals trying to find their footing. And despite the different industries, personalities, backgrounds, and pressures, one thing never really changes: people are far more emotionally connected than they let on.

What continues to amaze me is how badly people want to feel understood while simultaneously becoming experts at hiding what they feel. The titles get bigger. The salaries get higher. The polish improves. But underneath it, most people are still trying to answer the same questions: Am I valued? Can I trust this person? Do I feel safe here? Do I matter beyond my performance?

Some of the most effective leaders I’ve ever encountered were not the loudest voices in the room. They were the leaders who could read the room. The ones who understood that leadership is deeply personal. That every interaction leaves a mark. People may forget your strategy or your presentation, but they never forget how you consistently made them feel in your presence.

The longer I do this work, the more convinced I become that connection is not a soft skill. It’s the skill.
