January reviews are hopeful. August reviews are truthful.
In January, we set goals with clean notebooks and big intentions. In August, reality shows up. We see the project that stalled and the temporary workload that became permanent.
Mid-year feedback exposes patterns. You can’t hide behind “we’re just getting started.” By August, the work has a story. So does your leadership.
And what you may not be prepared for? August reviews reveal the emotional ledger. Who feels seen? Who feels used? Who has been growing, and who has been surviving? You see the team members carrying more than their fair share. And you see the team member who was promised training development but never received it.
August check-ins expose where friction is hiding. They tell you which systems are failing and where expectations are unclear. They may also show you if there is a high performer burning out.
Treat August more like a calibration than a critique. The second half of the year doesn’t need new goals. It needs a clearer game plan.
