What Three Decades Have Taught Me About Leadership

Jul 20, 2026 | Leadership

After 25 years as a global speaker and elite trainer (yes, I’m still incredibly grateful I get to do this for a living), I’ve had a front-row seat to humanity at its best and, at times, its most guarded. I’ve worked with leaders at every level across tech, SaaS, AI, healthcare, construction, financial services, professional services, and high-growth sales organizations.

But despite the different industries, personalities, backgrounds, and pressures, one thing never really changes: people need to be far more emotionally connected than they let on.

What continues to amaze me is how badly people want to feel understood while simultaneously becoming experts at hiding what they feel. Titles get bigger. Salaries get higher. Polish improves. Yet underneath it all, most people are still trying to answer a few very human questions:

  • Am I valued?
  • Can I trust this person?
  • Do I feel safe here?
  • Do I matter beyond my performance?

What continues to amaze me is how badly people want to feel understood while simultaneously becoming experts at hiding it. We spend years building confidence, credibility, and competence, yet many people still walk into meetings wondering if their voice matters.

The best leaders I’ve encountered understand this. They know leadership isn’t about managing tasks. It’s about understanding people. They read the room. They pay attention to what’s said and what’s left unsaid. They recognize that every interaction leaves a mark.

People may forget your strategy. They may forget your presentation. They may even forget that “urgent” email you sent at 9:47 p.m.

But they’ll remember how they felt after spending time with you. The longer I do this work, the more convinced I become that connection isn’t a soft skill.

It’s the skill.
