Why Most People Think Great Communicators (But May Not Be)

May 6, 2026 | Communication

There is an unfortunate pattern in business and in life. We tend to overestimate our ability to communicate effectively, and it comes with real consequences.

The core issue is that we confuse clarity in our own heads with clarity in another person’s world. We assume silence is agreement when it’s often confusion or politeness. We overvalue talking and underestimate checking for understanding. Worst of all, we evaluate ourselves by what we meant, while others judge us by what they felt and understood.

Bridging that gap takes intentional steps and honest self-reflection. Start with the finish line. For example: “By the end of this conversation, I want us to decide X. Does that work for you?” Now the conversation has a clear target.

Say less to make more impact. Less is more. Keep it tight. One idea at a time.

Get curious to ensure understanding. Ask people what they heard and what’s unclear. Thank them for their candor and don’t punish honest answers.

Practice reflective listening. Say, “Here’s what I heard you say…” Then ask, “Is that right?” or “What did I miss?” This keeps everyone on the same page.

Watch faces, posture, and pace. If energy drops, call it out: “I may be overloading us. Do you want the summary or the details?”

Close the loop. Clarify what everyone will do next and by when, then ask what could get in the way. Impact shows up in behavior change.

Great communicators focus less on talking and more on ensuring understanding. They measure success by what others can repeat and act on.

So, the real question is… how are you leveling up your communication?
