Silence makes people uncomfortable. That’s exactly why it’s so powerful.
In a negotiation, most people talk too much because they mistake discomfort for danger. The other side pushes back, the room goes quiet, and they rush to fill the space with more explanations, more justifications, or worse, concessions they never intended to make.
The irony is that the first person to break the silence is often the one who gives away leverage.
When you’ve made your point, stop talking. Let the other person think. Let them process. Let them wrestle with the decision instead of rescuing them from the discomfort.
The strongest negotiators know that silence isn’t empty. It’s where pressure builds, information surfaces, and better decisions are made.
Sometimes the most persuasive thing you can say…is nothing at all.
