Win-Win Negotiation Tactics: Creating Mutually Beneficial Relationships

Feb 19, 2024 | Negotiation

OK, January is behind us, and the year is officially underway. These cold, gray winter weeks
are prime time for leaders to reset team relationships with sharper focus and real
momentum. Because let’s be honest, even the best plan falls flat if the people behind it
aren’t aligned or bought in.

Start by reconnecting. Pause long enough to recognize wins, call out the tough stretches,
and share what the team learned along the way. Look back at where bandwidth was
stretched too thin and where decisions stalled. Examine which processes supported
progress and which quietly got in the way. Own what missed the mark while reinforcing
what worked. And most importantly, shine a light on effort that may have gone unnoticed.

Your gratitude motivates and energizes your team. They will feel valued and appreciated.

Next, reset. Co-create a set of 3-5 clear and measurable goals. Define the outcomes so
everyone can recognize when you’re winning and know what to stop doing to make room
for growth. Tie those goals directly to purpose. Each should mention who you’re serving
and the problems you’ll solve. Align the goals with realistic resources.

Be clear and specific. Turn goals into weekly habits and roles so everyone understands,
“This is mine.”

Then, recommit. Create a consistent rhythm that builds trust. Schedule regular progress
check-ins and address any blockers. Allocate time for monthly reviews of outcomes and lessons
learned, and plan quarterly resets on priorities. Write down agreements on how your team
will make and escalate decisions. Commit to removing obstacles and incorporating
learning into your plan.

When you let your team help set the goals and create the map, they are committed to the
outcome and will do everything they can to reach them.
