The last conversation of the day rarely brings out your best self. You still care, but your brain is tired. Your ability to be fully present is challenged.
Decision fatigue is what happens after a day of people problems and microscopic course corrections. By 4:30 p.m., your mental bandwidth is taxed, and your default settings take over. You become more reactive. You avoid risk. You rush. You potentially get sloppy with listening.
And that’s exactly when a deal can die. A prospect asks a nuanced question, and you answer too fast. A partner floats a concern, and you brush past it. Someone needs reassurance, and you give them efficiency.
The fix is respecting your cognitive energy. Put the most important conversations earlier. Don’t stack back-to-back calls without a transition. Take five minutes to reset before a negotiation. Eat something. Walk. Breathe.
People love to think they can power through anything. But the high performers and best closers know that timing matters.
If your close rate drops late in the week or late in the day, check your energy. The issue that you thought was a sales problem could very well be a fatigue problem.
