You’re Probably the Bottleneck

Jun 26, 2026 | Sales

One of the hardest truths in leadership is this: you can be incredibly helpful and still be the reason your team isn’t growing.

Many leaders unintentionally create dependency. Every decision flows through them. Every deck gets rewritten. Every problem gets escalated upward “just to be safe.” The team may perform, but only because the leader is carrying too much of the weight. That doesn’t scale.

You know it’s happening when your one-on-ones become status updates instead of coaching conversations. When your advice replaces thoughtful questions. When outcomes are reviewed, the skills behind those outcomes are never developed.

Strong leaders move from hero to multiplier. They define clear expectations, decision rights, and standards, then give people room to execute. Instead of controlling every move, they debrief key moments by asking: What worked? What didn’t? What would you do differently next time?

Leadership is not about being needed for every answer. It’s about building people who can think, lead, and execute without you constantly stepping in.

If you want a stronger team, stop being the reason they can’t grow.
