Have you ever left a conversation feeling like your point did not land? Like people heard you, but didn’t feel you?
The truth is, sometimes it’s not what you say but how you say it that holds you back. Influence is not just about having ideas. It’s about delivering them with power and clarity. Yet, there are three common communication habits many of us fall into that quietly sabotage our ability to influence others:
Overexplaining
We want to be clear, so we load our message with details, examples, and backup. But too much explanation can drown your main point in a sea of words.
Instead of sounding confident, you come across as unsure, even apologetic. Trust your audience. Say what matters and leave room for them to connect the dots. Over-explaining is exhausting for everyone, including you.
Hedging
“I think this might work… but maybe we should consider…” Sound familiar?
Hedging your statements with “I think,” “probably,” or “maybe” is like putting a question mark at the end of your confidence. It signals doubt, and people pick up on that.
When you hedge, you’re selling your ideas short. Own your words. Speak with conviction. It’s okay not to have all the answers, but deliver what you know with certainty.
Not pausing
Pauses aren’t empty space. They’re your secret weapon. Rushing through your points without silence can make your message feel jumbled and anxious.
A well-timed pause lets your audience absorb what you’ve said and gives your words weight. It shows you’re in control and confident. Break free from these habits. Speak less but mean more. Own your voice. Use silence as your stage. When you do, your influence will soar.
