Accepting and Owning Perceptions Tied to Professional Identities

Dec 9, 2023 | Personal Growth

In our professional journeys, it’s natural for our identities to become intertwined with our careers. However, being intertwined does not necessarily mean your professional identity becomes your personal, or vice versa.

Rather, learning to embrace these perceptions, both from within and outside, can be a powerful catalyst for personal and professional growth.

Let’s explore how to accept and own these perceptions and when to differentiate from them:

Self-Awareness

Start by understanding your own beliefs and perceptions about your professional identity. What do you value most about your work? What aspects of your professional self would you want to emphasize? How closely are you comfortable with your personal and professional lives intertwining?

External Perceptions

Pay attention to how others perceive you professionally but understand that your personal and professional lives are not one. Your professional identity is just that, an identity tied to your work. If you’re someone whose work becomes life, that’s okay, and if you’re not, that’s okay too. But it takes a degree of separation and looking inward to know when to draw the line between the two.

Own Your Expertise

Acknowledge your expertise and experience in your field. Confidence in your abilities is a powerful asset. This transcends boundaries and exudes confidence. If you know you’re a PRO, others will see it too.

Narrative Shaping

Craft your professional narrative. Share your story and experiences with others to shape how they perceive your professional identity. This can be separate to your personal narrative, or not. Again, it all depends on how closely you want the two to blend.

Mentorship

Engage with mentors who can guide you in navigating the complexities of your professional identity. Their insights can be invaluable.

Network Authentically

Build meaningful professional relationships based on authenticity and shared values. These connections can strengthen your professional identity.

Owning and accepting the perceptions attached to your professional identity is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. It’s about finding harmony between your personal values and your career path and using your unique strengths to make a meaningful impact.
