Team Empathy: Addressing Challenges in Remote Settings

Mar 27, 2024 | Collaboration, Remote Work

Leading teams effectively in remote or hybrid settings comes with unique challenges. Without regular in-person contact, it can be difficult to detect when someone on your team is struggling. Signs of burnout or disengagement are harder to spot over video calls, causing empathy — our ability to understand each other’s experiences — to ultimately suffer.

As leaders, we must proactively cultivate empathy among our distributed teams. Have regular check-ins via one-on-ones to learn how everyone is adjusting, ask thoughtful questions, actively listen without judgment, and share your own vulnerabilities to model openness to your team.

Additionally, emphasize work-life balance and self-care. Respect people’s availability outside standard hours by not expecting an immediate response, and offer flexibility in schedules and working hours so all team members can meet their individual needs without worry.

Leaders should also look for opportunities for the team to connect in informal virtual settings. Bring remote team members into brainstorms or meetings via video when possible, and conduct shared meals, coffee breaks, or virtual game nights so team bonding can happen more organically.

Most importantly, keep communication open. With geographic and cultural barriers, misunderstandings can easily happen via chat or email, so encourage team members to clarify their intentions to avoid escalating conflicts.

With some thoughtful adjustments, we can lead resilient teams across locations grounded in empathy, alignment, and shared purpose. Our virtual tables may be scattered, but the bonds we build through openness and understanding will only grow stronger over distances.
