This post is a little different, but I often get questions about where to start a career in sales. While I train on Selling Like A PRO®, the first step for many is getting started.
A successful career in sales can get a jumpstart with the right education, and there are a few degrees that can really support a thriving sales career. You don’t have to put yourself in one box to be successful.
Here are some degrees I personally think would be helpful:
Business Administration
A degree in Business Administration offers an understanding of sales, marketing, and management, equipping you with fundamental skills crucial for success in the field.
Marketing
Focused on consumer behavior, market trends, and effective communication, a degree in marketing provides a strong foundation if you’re aiming to pursue sales-oriented roles. You’ll know how to market the product you’re selling, and yourself, which is a big part of sales.
Communication
Degrees in Communication support the verbal and written skills necessary for building relationships, understanding client needs, and delivering compelling sales pitches. These types of degrees give you an insider scoop on how to relate, inform and build trust with a human centric approach.
Psychology
A degree in Psychology provides valuable insights into human behavior and decision-making, offering a unique perspective beneficial in understanding and influencing potential clients. This is one of my favorites. You must understand people to sell, and this degree is the cornerstone of that.
Economics
A degree in Economics provides a solid understanding of market dynamics, pricing strategies, and economic trends, offering valuable insights for individuals seeking success in sales. If you’re a big numbers and data person, this could be a good degree for you that highlights the fundamentals.
While formal education is certainly valuable, practical experience through internships, networking, and continuous professional development is equally important in sales. Don’t box yourself into one space, expand your knowledge base and learn as much as you can about industries that interest you. The key to jumpstarting a winning career in sales lies in combining theoretical knowledge with real-world application.
