Building a Personal Board of Advisors

Nov 15, 2024 | Personal Growth

I’m a big believer in the power of building a strong personal board of advisors. From the very start of my career, I’ve made it a priority to surround myself with a core group of trusted individuals — some who have been with me for the long haul, and others who’ve come and gone as life and circumstances change. This group has been essential to my growth, both personally and professionally, shaping who I am today.

To recap: I feel strongly that a personal board, or carefully curated group of mentors and advisors, provides individuals with invaluable guidance and different perspectives and helps navigate many areas.

What makes a board of advisors powerful? Diversity of age and experience.

The value of multi-generational wisdom

Seasoned advisors bring a lifetime of experience. Having witnessed numerous industry cycles, economic shifts, and societal changes, their long-term perspective helps you understand the broader implications of your decisions and offers stability during uncertain times.

On the flip side, younger advisors bring fresh energy to your thinking. They’re tapped into the latest trends and tech innovations, offering insights you might not have considered. Their new perspectives challenge the status quo and drive innovation, helping ensure your strategies remain future-ready.

Expansive skillsets and industry insights

Your personal board should tap into various skill sets and industry knowledge. Whether it’s finance, marketing, technology, or leadership, each advisor brings unique expertise. This breadth of knowledge helps you approach challenges from multiple angles, fostering a more holistic view and enabling well-rounded decision-making.

Additionally, diverse experiences mean access to broader networks. Leveraging these networks as needed accelerates your growth and can open valuable doors.

Differing perspectives

Different perspectives challenge assumptions, inspire creative thinking, and lead to more robust problem-solving. Instead of echo chambers where everyone agrees, a diverse advisory board thrives on thoughtful debate and synthesizing ideas.

Diversity in age and experience also contributes to emotional and psychological balance. Seasoned advisors can offer calming, pragmatic advice during turbulent times, drawing from years of navigating similar waters. Younger advisors might bring a sense of urgency and excitement, propelling you to seize opportunities and take calculated risks.
