Connection Is the Key to Navigating Difficult Conversations

Sep 4, 2025 | Difficult Conversations

The world is a pretty interesting place right now, and we are seeing opinions clash and tensions rise on multiple levels. A charged atmosphere in any setting makes difficult conversations inevitable. Yet we can approach these moments in ways that turn conflict into understanding.

The secret is connection.

Why connection matters in tough conversations

When we enter tough discussions, it’s natural to brace for battle, to defend our views with vigor. But focusing solely on “winning” overlooks the foundation that makes any conversation meaningful: human connection.

Connection is about truly seeing and hearing the person across from us, recognizing their humanity and acknowledging what lies beneath the words: their underlying motivators.

Understanding motivators for better outcomes

Everyone has core elements in their personality that drive who they are, how they engage in the world, and with other people. Through decades of training and working with high performing professionals, I have identified four core motivators that everyone has within them:

  • The Need to be Right
  • The Need to Look Good
  • The Need to be Safe
  • The Need to be Liked.

Understanding what motivates you and how it influences everything you do is the first step to navigating a difficult conversation for you personally.

Once you understand what motivates someone else in a conversation, you will have a ton of information to navigate that conversation adeptly and expertly for the best possible outcome for everyone involved.
