How to Rock the Difficult Conversations

Apr 9, 2026 | Difficult Conversations

You don’t need perfect words for tough conversations. You need the discipline to stay in the room and be fully present when it matters.

Start by getting yourself right. If your heart is racing, your mouth isn’t your best spokesperson. Pause. Breathe. Take a walk. Count to ten. Then step in.

Before you go in, check the timing. Ask if it’s a good moment. You’ve grounded yourself, now make sure they’re in a place to engage so the conversation stays productive. When you open, drop the accusation and lead with ownership. Something as simple as, “Here’s my experience,” sets the tone.

Then anchor it with dual truth. “I can see how that frustrated you, and I also felt pressure tested.”

Be specific instead of global. For example, saying “When the plan changed last minute, I felt dismissed” ties hurt feelings to a single event. When you say, “You never consider me,” it sounds more like an attack on their character and they will get defensive.

Pair boundaries carefully. You could try something like, “I’m not okay when someone raises their voice, but I’m happy to talk when we’re both calm.”

Ensure this becomes a continuing practice. Circle back with a question like, “Is there anything we still need to talk about?”

Hard talks strain relationships, but avoidance can break them. Bring a steady voice and a soft heart to these conversations. You’ve got this!
