Bridging Generational Gaps: Integrating Gen Z with Multi-Generational Teams for Success

Aug 8, 2024 | Collaboration

The United States is currently facing a significant labor shortage, but the solution may come sooner than it may seem. Individuals born between 1997 and 2012 — known collectively as Gen Z — are graduating from college and entering the workforce, creating a situation where members of Gen Z are working alongside older or even much older coworkers.

As more Gen Zers enter the workforce and take on leadership roles, employers are starting to see their strengths. For starters, Gen Z is a generation of tech natives—they’ve been swiping and clicking since day one. This makes them quick learners who adapt to new technology faster than you can say “password reset.”

Plus, Gen Z is incredibly diverse and values communication, collaboration, and diverse thinking. In a workplace that encourages collaboration across age, gender, and culture, Gen Z is set to thrive. They’re ready to bring fresh ideas and energy to the table—just make sure the WiFi is strong!

An intergenerational workforce also provides a tremendous knowledge-sharing opportunity and cross-generational mentoring. Although one normally thinks of a mentoring relationship as older individuals sharing their wisdom with those younger than them, mentoring can absolutely go both ways. For example, while older members of the workforce pass down their experience in the company and industry, Gen Z workers can return the favor by sharing their experience with technology and current world perspectives.

As Gen Z steps into the workforce, integrating them into the workforce is an integral step for our business landscape. By blending Gen Z’s strengths with those of older generations, we’ll create a more collaborative, diverse, and ultimately, more productive team.
