Not everyone will lead a company, but many will lead at least one individual, a few or perhaps a lot during their career. How you lead matters to the other person and to the company.
Here are a few elements to consider as you work on being the best leader you can.
1. Generational Awareness
Leaders will work with individuals of all ages so they must understand and embrace the unique perspectives, values, and communication styles that each generation brings. By fostering an inclusive environment, you can create a collaborative space where everyone feels valued and understood. This will make people happier, and ultimately strengthen the team as a whole with decades of experience recognized and maximized.
2. Coaching Mindset
A great leader not only shows the way, but they also empower individuals to be better and find what works best for them. Strong leaders coach to support the strengths of those they lead as well as develop key growth areas to maximize success for the individual, team, customers and ultimately the company.
3. Interviewing Effectiveness
Building a high-performing team starts with hiring the right talent, so hone your interviewing skills to assess candidates’ qualifications, experience, and cultural fit. Craft insightful questions that delve beyond surface-level responses, enabling you to gain a deeper understanding of their capabilities and potential contributions.
4. Emotional Intelligence
Heighten your emotional intelligence (EI) because it’s the cornerstone of effective leadership. Those with a higher degree of EI know who they are, they have strong self-awareness and can effectively and appropriately manage their emotions. They can also recognize the emotions and resulting behaviors in others to lead empathetically. Some naturally have high EI and others can learn the skills. In either case, we can always get better, so check in on your EI.
