A diverse generational workforce is an incredible thing. It provides a dynamic work environment and a great opportunity for leaders (or potential leaders) to maximize talents at so many levels, but, as we see too often, there are challenges.
Every generation thinks the one behind them is the problem or the one that came before has no idea what they’re doing.
As a leader, this can be challenging to work with and navigate. So, how do you stay current for the new generation coming in? You guessed it, empathy.
Leading with empathy allows you to step out of the dynamics or conflicts that arise and work with the person in front of you (regardless of their age). When you lead with empathy, you are present for every conversation or interaction, you can see the perspective of another person while managing yourself and your instincts in the moment to have a productive interaction or outcome.
Leaders that can do this effectively will always attract and retain top talent.
Here are a few tips to think about as an empathetic leader:
- Be flexible: Learn to pivot. How you envision something may not be the way others do. Listen to what works for the individual and group so you can pivot accordingly for the best outcome. Your way is not always the only or right way.
- Create a sense of community: I call anyone that works with me “Team Bramson.” While my name is on the door, it’s important to me that everyone understands how they contribute to the organization as a whole. Everyone is valued and important for all we do.
Back in the day, no one talked about empathy, it was too touchy feely. Thankfully. We now know that it is truly the only way to effectively lead where you empower your team and create an environment of growth, always.
