“Let’s stay in touch” is the death of every ‘business card’. It feels polite but means nothing.
Networking is broken because we treat it like collecting people instead of building connections. We’re taught to “follow up,” but not to be authentic and genuinely useful. We send a less-than-compelling LinkedIn message every now and then. We promise coffee we never schedule and then wonder why our network doesn’t show up when we need it.
What works is specificity and service. Instead of “let’s connect,” try: “I loved what you said just then. Would you be open to a 15-minute call next week so I can learn more?”
Instead of “we should collaborate,” try: “I have an idea that fits on less than one page. Want to give your thoughts on it?”
Real networking is small and consistent deposits. It’s remembering what someone cares about and being the person who follows through. It’s less about being impressive and more about being responsive and reliable.
If you want a strong network, stop staying in touch. Start building trust by being specific and useful.
