High performers often look untouchable. They crush deadlines, exceed expectations, and make it all look easy. But what most people do not see is what is happening underneath. A lot of them are running on fumes. Burnout is real, even for the best. And the part many leaders miss is this: it is not about capability. It is about being left alone to carry the weight.
The hidden cost of high performance
This kind of burnout does not come from the work itself. High performers live for challenge. They want to win. The problem arises when ambition lacks support. When output gets mistaken for immunity. When the quiet stress builds, day after day, because no one is checking in, just counting on them to figure it all out. The best do not break because they are weak. They break because no one thought to ask how they were holding up.
What leaders often miss
Leaders praise the achievements of their top performers but often miss warning signs that indicate these employees are exhausted and emotionally drained from always being “the one who gets it done.” Compliments and rewards are nice, but they don’t solve the root issue. Besides recognition, high performers need reinforcement. They need:
- Clear priorities
- Realistic expectations
- The assurance that they’re not carrying the weight of the team on their own.
Support and boundaries matter
Leaders assume competence equals invincibility, but even the strongest employees need boundaries, feedback, and, most importantly, permission to pause. Without this, their passion turns into pressure, and that pressure ultimately leads to burnout.
If you’re a leader, ask yourself whether you are supporting your high performers or just expecting them to keep going. High performers must recognize that their well-being is just as important as their work. Don’t just clap for your top talent. Stand beside them and support them.
